Our herd is composed of Belted Galloway Cattle, a breed that originated in the Galloway district of Scotland in the 16th century. They are known for an exceptionally lean and flavorful meat. They keep warm in the winter from their double coat of hair consisting of a dense, soft, short undercoat and a long, shaggy overcoat which they normally cast off in the summer. This means they do not need much of a layer of fat to keep them warm. This helps explain why they are so lean. Their carcasses have only about 2% total fat of which only 1% is saturated fat.
They are known for their grazing ability, longevity and hardiness.
